Authorities in Tulungagung Regency, East Java, have suspended the operational activities of the SPPG school meal program across the area following reports of stomach pain experienced by 198 students and teachers. The incidents involved dozens of students from vocational high schools (SMK) and elementary schools, prompting the local health service office to order a temporary halt while tracing the source of the complaints.
Cases of residents complaining of stomach ache and gastrointestinal symptoms began to be reported in the past two weeks. On the latest wave, a total of 198 students and educators were recorded experiencing nausea, abdominal pain, and other discomforts shortly after consuming the distributed meals. Several of the affected students had to be escorted to the school health unit (Unit Kesehatan Sekolah/UKS), including those at SMK Negeri 1 Boyolangu, which became one of the locations that received the most reports from students seeking post-meal checks.

Head of the Tulungagung Health Office confirmed that the report was received from several schools, with the concentration of cases occurring at vocational schools and public elementary schools. "We received reports of students experiencing stomach pain after eating. The number recorded reached 198 people, consisting of students and teachers. Of course, we take this seriously and treat it as a priority," he said on Sunday (26/9/2026).
According to the official, the majority of the students who complained did not exhibit severe symptoms. Most were treated at the UKS with observation and rest, and several were advised to consult a doctor or continue treatment at a health facility. "The condition of the students is generally improving. None of the cases required intensive care, but we continue to monitor to make sure there are no complications," he explained.

Following the surge in reports, the regency government decided to stop all SPPG operational activities in Tulungagung. The suspension covers the cooking, packaging, and distribution stages, particularly the menu served that day which is suspected of being linked to the cases. Distribution of meals to students is also postponed until a thorough check is completed.
"We have decided to suspend the operations for a short period. This is intended so that the investigation can proceed calmly, and so students and parents do not worry," said a Tulungagung Regency Education Office official. The official also confirmed that the suspension was not a termination of the program, but a temporary pause while verification and evaluation take place.
School principals in several Tulungagung districts were instructed to maintain close monitoring of students' health conditions. Schools are also asked to report directly to the Health Office if new cases with similar symptoms are found.

The Health Office said it had deployed a team to conduct an investigation covering the kitchen, food processing, distribution, and the meals themselves. "The investigation will look at all links, from raw materials, processing, to distribution. We want to find out whether the complaints came from the food, or from other factors such as students' own health conditions or the surrounding environment," the official explained.
He also reminded the public not to circulate unverified information and to wait for the official results. According to him, the Health Office will provide an explanation regarding the results of the initial examination in the near future, including whether the program can resume immediately or requires improvements in hygiene standards, cooking, and distribution.
